Vaping Cannabis May Reduce Harmful Chemicals by 99%, Study Finds

For many cannabis consumers, smoking a joint remains the most familiar way to consume cannabis. But new research suggests that simply changing how cannabis is consumed could significantly reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.

According to a new U.S. study, vaporizing cannabis instead of smoking it can reduce harmful combustion byproducts by up to 99%. The findings add to growing evidence that many of the health risks associated with inhaling cannabis are linked to combustion, rather than the cannabis plant itself.

It’s the Smoke, Not the Cannabis

When cannabis is lit, temperatures exceed 600°C, triggering combustion. This process not only releases cannabinoids such as CBD, but also creates dozens of unwanted chemicals through pyrolysis and oxidation.

Among these are benzene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde—compounds classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Harmful and Potentially Harmful Constituents (HPHCs). These substances are also commonly associated with tobacco smoke and poor air quality.

Vaporizers avoid this process by heating cannabis below its combustion point. Instead of smoke, users inhale a vapour containing cannabinoids and terpenes while producing far fewer toxic byproducts.

Comparing Smoking and Vaping

To quantify the difference, researchers compared cannabis smoke from traditional joints with vapour generated by two PAX devices: the FLOW dry herb vaporizer and the TRIP cannabis oil vaporizer.

Using the same batch of cannabis for every test, scientists analysed sixteen different harmful compounds produced during inhalation.

Across all measured substances, vaporizing consistently resulted in dramatically lower concentrations than smoking. In several cases, the reduction reached as much as 99%, highlighting just how much of the toxic exposure comes from burning plant material rather than consuming cannabis itself.

Why Temperature Matters

The findings reinforce a principle that has been well understood in aerosol science: temperature determines which compounds are released.

Combustion breaks down not only cannabinoids and terpenes but also plant fibres, proteins and lipids, creating fine particulate matter and numerous chemical byproducts. These compounds are largely absent—or present in much lower concentrations—when cannabis is heated instead of burned.

According to the researchers, this makes controlled vaporization a practical harm reduction strategy for adults who already choose to inhale cannabis.

More Than Just Cleaner Vapour

Beyond reducing harmful chemicals, many consumers report that dry herb vaporizers use cannabis more efficiently than traditional joints. Because cannabinoids are released gradually instead of being destroyed by combustion, users often need less flower to achieve the desired effects.

Lower temperatures also preserve more of the plant’s natural terpene profile, resulting in richer flavour and aroma.

An Important Caveat

The study was funded and conducted by PAX, a manufacturer of cannabis vaporizers. While this should be considered when evaluating the results, the findings are broadly consistent with previous independent research showing that avoiding combustion significantly reduces exposure to toxic byproducts.

Although vaping cannot be described as risk-free, the available evidence increasingly suggests that for adults who choose to inhale cannabis, switching from smoking to vaporizing may substantially reduce exposure to many of the harmful chemicals produced during combustion.

As more research becomes available, the focus is shifting away from whether people consume cannabis and increasingly towards how they consume it.
